I SAW A WARNING SIGN
Sometimes Ryan cursed his fast paced mind; there was always something occupying his thoughts. Most people that knew Ryan would be surprised by this fact. How could such a carefree, sarcastic asshole actually care about complex aspects of life? But he actually did. That was where he got the majority of the inspiration for song lyrics. He pondered the injustices done by people to others. He thought about how people judge others with their preconceived opinions and ideals. Ryan put those accidental thoughts into words sung to a melody for others to relate. And, as odd as it may seem to the outsider, Ryan came up with many of those lyrics at his favorite place in Detroit, a quaint 24-hour diner. On sleepless nights, which there were many of for Ryan, he would drive to the diner, sit in a booth against the window, and think.
Right now, that’s where he was. The side of his head pressed against the cold window on his left. He watched as his warm breath fogged up the glass and left behind a small cloud of condensation. Ryan often drew in that small area of white, keeping himself entertained as he did so. Now, however, Ryan left the glass untouched and simply watched as the white disappeared. He stared through the cold, dry air on the other side of the window at the neon “All Night Diner” sign. He studied the different colors comprising the sign through his tired eyes. For Ryan, he sometimes felt more “out of it” at night when sleep was beginning to win its fight against him than when he was pounding alcoholic drink after drink down his throat. The littlest of things put him in awe as he fought the overwhelming dreariness. Like that beautiful girl crossing his line of vision in the parking lot. He watched her every move, amazed for some odd reason.
On a normal night, Ryan would let his eyes fall from the girl and wander to something else. He would play it cool for a while, silently listening to her if possible. If he was within earshot of her, he would listen to her voice as she spoke to a waitress or someone else. And after a few casual sips of his drink that he used to steal a glance at the girl, deciding whether or not she was worth it, he would casually walk over to her and start up a conversation. The details of the conversation would vary greatly depending on the situation, but the ending almost always would remain the same: Ryan would get a few drinks into the girl, either by taking her to a bar, or by buying her drinks if they were at a bar, and then he would take her back to his place. And that was that.
However, tonight was not a normal night. Ryan kept his eyes on the girl, even as he felt his eyelids begin to get heavy. He only looked away when he needed to get a cup of coffee from the waitress. Ryan could not pinpoint the reasons for his odd behavior this early morning, but he knew that he had to control himself. He knew that if the girl caught is eye, everything could go wrong, or nothing could go at all. Ry knew the second option was the more likely option, but he always liked to be at least a little optimistic. In Ryan’s mind even if everything went wrong, things at least happened. Ryan dragged his weary eyes away from the only female worth looking at in the diner, took a long sip of coffee, and, after placing his cup on the sticky table, looked down at his hands, keeping control of himself.
